São Jorge
Vertiginous 500-metre cliffs plunge directly into the sea. At their feet lie the fajãs — coastal platforms born from lava flows, ideal for a wild ocean swim.
São Jorge is the island of cliffs — 500 metres of basalt plunging directly into the Atlantic along the entire length of the island. Coastal sailing along this natural wall is an unforgettable experience: you feel small, humbled by these vertiginous walls that the sea endlessly carves.
At the base of the cliffs, the fajãs are black lava platforms where a few houses still stand. Some are only accessible by sea — the sailboat anchors off black pebble beaches, in a silence broken only by the sound of surf. One of the most wild and beautiful anchorages in the archipelago.
São Jorge is also known for its artisan cheese, one of Portugal's finest, and for spectacular walks along the clifftops. An island for sailors who appreciate effort rewarded.
