FAQ
Everything you need to know before you set sail.
The cruise
This programme is open to anyone who wants to discover sailing, brush up their skills, or prepare for a longer voyage. The aim is to combine instructional sailing (manoeuvres, helming, theory, safety) with the exploration of the archipelagos.
Days vary with wind and weather. A typical passage day begins with a briefing on navigation. Everyone takes turns at the helm and on watch. Evenings are spent at anchor sharing a meal in the saloon.
No. Nerida welcomes complete beginners and experienced sailors alike. Our instructors tailor the programme to each participant's level and objectives.
A maximum of 6 participants plus the 2-person crew. This small group ensures personalised attention and genuine immersion.
Ocean sailing requires some physical engagement. You don't need to be an athlete, but a reasonable level of fitness is helpful.
The archipelagos are full of spectacular spots and pristine beaches. Anchorages are planned according to weather conditions and the navigation programme.
The Azores are a cetacean sanctuary: sperm whales, Risso's dolphins, common bottlenose dolphins, false killer whales, blue whales, and humpback whales. The sea floor is worth exploring by snorkelling for the more adventurous.
Practical
The boat kitty (€300/person for 10 days) is pooled in cash at the start of the trip to cover all shared expenses: crew provisions, restaurants and alcohol (except for non-drinkers), mooring buoys, port fees, diesel for the inboard engine, petrol for the dinghy outboard, laundry, and the skipper's food. Not included in the kitty: bars, and individual activities such as excursions, park entry fees, or diving.
The price includes accommodation aboard, all meals and beverages, sailing equipment, port fees, and personalised instruction. Flights are not included.
For 10 days on a sailboat, pack everything in a soft bag — rigid suitcases are very hard to stow below deck. Bring a set of warm clothing and a windproof jacket for evenings and excursions. A full packing list is sent upon booking confirmation.
Provisioning takes place on the first day at the departure port, close to two supermarkets and a fruit and vegetable market. Further stops along the route allow for additional provisioning on the islands.
Internet connectivity at sea is limited. We recommend treating the cruise as a genuine digital detox — it's part of what makes the experience transformative.
The Atlantic can be lively. We recommend consulting your doctor about preventive medication. Most participants adapt quickly.
Mangareva has completed several transatlantic crossings and carries: 2 trolling rods, 2 spearguns, 1 diving set (no compressor, but many dive schools are available on the islands), 1 asymmetric spinnaker, 1 paddleboard, 2 folding mini bikes, and snorkelling gear.
