Corvo
One volcanic crater, one village, 400 inhabitants. Corvo is the inhabited end of the world — a rare and precious call, nestled in the Caldeirão, a vast mist-covered caldera.
Corvo is an inhabited crater — nothing more. The Caldeirão, the central caldera, wraps the island's only village in mist and greenery. 400 inhabitants, one grocery store, the end of the world. And yet, something unique in the air.
For sailors, Corvo is a rare stopover. The anchorage is exposed to the northern swell, the stay often brief. But being there, at the edge of European waters, facing the open Atlantic, carries something that few navigators ever know — a sense of boundary, of the world's end, that very few places can offer.
The climb to the Caldeirão, through misty pastures, is a short but striking walk. Below, the lake in the crater. Above, the Atlantic stretching endlessly. Corvo is the stopover that gets talked about long afterwards.
